Why could Michael Chertoff be Mabus?

Judge Michael Chertoff was born November 28, 1953 in Elizabeth, New Jersey. He later attended Harvard University and Harvard Law School.

He worked in private practice with Latham & Watkins from 1980 to 1983. He was later hired as a prosecutor by Rudolph Giuliani, U.S. attorney for Manhattan.

George H.W. Bush appointed him as United States Attorney for New Jersey in 1990. Chertoff returned to private practice with Latham & Watkins as a partner in 1994. During the Whitewater Scandal which the Clintons were being investigated, he was was special counsel for the Senate committee.Chertoff was special counsel to the New Jersey State Senate Judiciary Committee, investigating racial profiling in New Jersey in 2000.

Chertoff headed the criminal division of the Department of Justice from 2001 to 2003. He came under fire for legal strategies used after September 11 2001, including the detainment of Middle Eastern immigrants.

In 2005, he became Secretary of the United States Department of Homeland Security under President George Bush.
